The Highway Garage is open Monday thru Friday 7am to 3:30pm.  These hours will change in the Spring/Summer/Early Fall when they switch to a four day work day.

With the winter season upon us, please use caution when driving. Remember, none of our practices are intended to slow you down. They are intended to maximize safety. Be patient and drive with caution.

  • Don’t crowd the Plow – plows are big and have many blind spots. A plow truck loaded with salt weighs more than 10 tons. Their size and weight makes it difficult to maneuver or stop quickly.
  • NEVER pass a snow plow – they can kick up clouds of snow that reduce visibility for motorists.
  • Stay well behind the plow – up to 8 car lengths! – where the road is freshly plowed. It’s the safest place to drive.
  •

511NY is an important resource that allows travelers to know the current travel conditions in real time before heading out on a trip. You can access by either calling 511, visiting the website or download the free mobile app from iTunes or Google Play.

Also Please DO NOT plow snow across the road. IT IS ILLEGAL! Article 1219 of New York State Vehicle & Traffic Law makes it illegal to plow, shovel, or blow snow into a street or highway

Other winter tips

  • If there is a storm, please bring your garbage and recycling receptacles inside so that they are not an obstacle for the snow plows. If there is a storm on pick up day, it will be picked up the next day unless it is a weekend or holiday.
  • Please make sure receptacles are no larger than 35 gallons. Our guys pick them up, not machines.
  • Please remove basketball hoops from the edge of the road.

We would also like to remind everyone that the town of Hadley has a local law regarding parking (Local Law #1 of 1999). Here are some key details of the law;

  • No parking on walkways except in an emergency or when directed to do so by a police officer.
  • NO PARKING NOVEMBER 1ST THROUGH APRIL 1ST no parking on public roads except in the case of an emergency or directed by a police officer.
  • Violation of this could lead to a $250.00 fine and/or be removed by the town to a safe location and stored until retrieved by the owner at the expense of the owner of the vehicle.

We appreciate your cooperation – it makes snow removal so much easier.
